Cookd: the Recipe App

spring 2024 // user experience & Interface design

In a small group, the issues with the current Findlay Market shopping app were identified. It was decided that the app was cluttered and made online and in-person shopping more difficult, rather than easier.

Problem Space + Opportunities

the Problem
While recording my time and interactions, I noted my poor eating habits, such as having a late and unhealthy breakfast and skipping lunch, as well as how they were affecting my mood and energy. I noted having a headache and being hungry once again just a few hours after eating my first meal. This is a consistent issue within my life; I just don’t have the structure or resources to make myself delicious meals that are both health-conscious and diverse.

The Opportunity
This platform would boast an almost social media-like presence for building recipe books and encouraging users to make sure they’re making and eating full meals, while simultaneously diversifying their palettes.

Users would have the ability to find new recipes and share with friends or joined communities and could leave reviews offering suggestions for recipe adjustments for differing preferences and restrictions.

Using favorited recipes and ingredients, users could discover new cuisine-types (for example: rice is a staple in many different global cuisines). The platform could use album-like groupings for saved recipes to create their own personalized cookbook at the touch of their fingers.

User Personas

Eleanor
A freshman at UC living in an on-campus dorm with a kitchen. Her roommates typically eat in the dining halls, but unfortunately for Eleanor, she doesn’t have time between classes and homework to go with them, so she lives off of frozen instant meals.

She wishes that she could actually cook, but never learned how before leaving home and doesn’t know where to start or what to buy from the store.

Patty
A retired librarian who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in the past five years, and it’s beginning to affect her motor skills and memory. Her daughter lives nearby, but Patty dislikes feeling like a burden to her and would like to continue feeling independent despite her worsening diagnosis.

Patty sometimes feels isolated with her condition and wishes she could have help selecting foods to cook without feeling like a bother to her daughter.
